In Kenya, smallholder farmers produce over 75 percent of agricultural output, but their survival is impeded by key challenges ranging from access to input and output markets; infrastructure; extension services; institutional problems; climate change and food security.
The Founders of EMEDEN, born and raised in rural areas, experienced first-hand these challenges, watching the daily struggles of farmers as they worked hard on their small farms but getting very little in return.
To achieve economic revolution, Kenya need to focus on creating a sustainable agricultural mechanism in the rural areas, hence a focus on the smallholder farmer.
The Vision of EMEDEN is “Empowered smallholder farmers engaged in sustainable agriculture for sustainable livelihoods” and its Mission is to work for smallholder farmers for sustainable livelihoods. EMEDEN is guided by the following Core Values:
POTENTIAL: All people are created with potential to succeed in whatever they aspire to do and our natural environment regardless of its nature and climatic conditions is well endowed to produce and help support livelihoods.
UNITY: Unity is strength, in it, all people can overcome adversity of any form.
RESPECT: Respect for self, fellow human beings and our natural environment is the key to development.
EDUCATION: Learning is a continuous lifetime activity that enables people to maximize their potential
